Lifespan of bettas

Does anyone know how long bettas live on average and how to extend their life as long as possible?

Betta's live about 5 years under perfect conditions but 2-3 years is about the average..When buying bettas its good to look for how active they are and size a smaller betta is often a younger one as bigger ones mean they might have some age to them and a shorter life span... King Betta's are hard to judge when you go to look at them I have one and still don't know his age but he has gotten big since I have owned him so I am guessing he was a youngster when I got him.. a lazy betta might be a sick betta.. I like to use the pen test to see how much spunk a fish has before I buy them and any ball point cap will tell you if the betta is active,a fighter,or not to brave for they will think the cap is a another betta when you point it at him

5 to 6 years can be expected from a young, healthy betta purchased from good conditions. The species doesn't really matter that much, but I do know that dragons will not live as long as veils, partially due to their genetics in breeding. Veils can live for quite a long time. Their fins will curl at the end and they tend to drag their back end (like an saggy old man :) ) when they start to really age.
