tank shapes?

Postby roseymeow » Mon Aug 26, 2013 10:24 pm

I have a one gallon tank and a one gallon vase in which I keep betta fish. For some reason the fish in the vase seems happier than the one in the aquarium!!! Has anyone ever had this occur?

What do you consider to be a sign of the fish being "happier?"

A Betta fish will do better in a horizontally spaced tank rather than a vertical one because they breath from the surface using a lung-like organ called a labyrinth organ. It is used to breath in addition to their gills, making accessible surfaces essential. Horizontal tanks let the fish swim easier to the surface as well as allowing more air into the water.

A 1-gallon vase is also more difficult to own a heater for. Heaters are needed for this tropical fish species to thrive and can account for more activity.
